Define the term antibiotic.
Antibiotic- a substance produced by a living organism that are fed to reduce the incidence of subclinical levels of bacterial infections in the digestive and respiratory tracts. They have bacteriostatic or bactericidal properties and normal improve rate of gain and feed efficiency.
Define the term chemotherapeutic agent.
An inorganic or organic compound that inhibits the growth of organism but is not produced by a living organism.
Define the term probiotic.
Substances that contain desirable gastrointestinal microbial cultures. Most common: Lactobacillus, bacillus, strep faecium, etc.
Define the term anthelmintic.
Drugs used to control internal parasites, normally put in feed to control worms.
Why are antioxidants added to rations?
Antioxidants have value in reducing oxidation if dietary nutrients like vit E and unsaturated fats. They are also very effective in preventing deterioration of stored feeds and are commonly used for this. Synthetic antioxidants also prevent these reactions in animal tissues, thus having a sparing effect in vit E and selenium requirements.
